Obituary - Posted: 5/22/03 Obituaries for May 23, 2003Edna Backlund Funeral services for Edna Louise Backlund, 91, Oak Grove, took place May 21 at Nowthen Alliance Church. Backlund died May 16 at the Augustana Health Care Center of Minneapolis. She was born Feb. 27, 1912 in Lake Eunice Township, Detroit Lakes, to Albert John Holstad and Annie Johnson. She was a retired pastry chef at Carl's Cafe in Anoka. She is survived by her sons, Duane and Ronald of Minneapolis, Larry of Anoka; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth Rodman of Coon Rapids; sister-in-law, Evy Halstad; and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester G. Backlund; and brothers, Freddie and Al Holstad. Interment was at Lake Eunice Free Church Cemetery, Detroit Lakes. Arrangements were by Thurston-Lindberg Funeral Home, Anoka. Janice Bell Funeral services for Janice C. Bell, 64, Blaine, took place May 19 at Thurston-Lindberg Funeral Home, Anoka. Rev. Liane S. Rock officiated. Bell died May 16 at her home. She was born March 16, 1939 in Minneapolis to Clarence Wennberg and Lillian Thompson, and worked in food service at Burger King. She is survived by her daughter, Jodi (Mark) Shape; son, Michael (Dianna); grandchildren, Angie and Joe Shape, Brittani and Jordon Bell; brothers, Jerry (Barb) Wennberg and Greg Wennberg; sisters, Kathy (John) Johnson; and special uncle, Paul Thompson. She was preceded in death by her husband, David W. Bell. Arrangements were by Thurston-Lindberg Funeral Home. Curtis Chamberlain Funeral services for Curtis K. Chamberlain, 77, Anoka, took place May 18 at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, Anoka. Rev. Dennis Heiden officiated. Chamberlain died May 14 at his residence. He was born Oct. 27, 1925 in Anoka to Clarence E. and Irene M. (Curtis) Chamberlain and was a maintenance worker. He is survived by his wife, Jeannine; children, Bert (Barb), Kay (James) Neutz, Sharon (Dana) Jessen; grandchildren, Richard, Kevin, and Dane; sister, Myrtle Daml; and brother, Donald (Terri). He was born Jan. 17, 1920 in Minneapolis to Andrew and Freda (Mortenson) Jessen and was the owner/operator of a vending machine company. He is survived by his wife, June; children, Janice (Francis) Feil, Marty (Georgia), Judy (Ralph) Huntosh, Joyce (Terry) O'Loughlin, Joan (Ken) Ewer; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters, Lily Luke, Gloria Bray, Gladys Lynch, Marilyn Anderson; brother, Andrew "Red" (Laurel) Jessen; sister-in-law, June P. Weber and Maria C. Palumbo and was a legal secretary. She is survived by her children, Patricia (Gary) Bojan, Thomas Stein, Jacki (Ron) Shawd and Vicki (Doug) Trees; grandchildren, Rachael, Angela, Frankie, Tony, Andy, Nicholas, Troy, Kyle and Sean; great-grandchildren, Angeline, Linnea and Elena; and sisters, Maria Csencsitz and Bette Beck. Rick Banker officiated. Lang died May 19 at Friendship Manor Care Center, Shakopee. He was born Dec. 10, 1925 in Tokio, N.D., to Fredrick and Emma (Smith) Lang. He was a sheet metal worker, a life member of Spring Lake Park VFW Post and the Knights of Columbus at St. Timothy's Catholic Church, Blaine. He is survived by his children, Shelley (Stephan) Toso of Prior Lake, Dale (Carla) Lang of Andover, Ken Lang of Prior Lake; grandchildren, Brian (Tammy) Toso, Nicole Toso, Ryan Lang, Katie Lang, Adam Lang, Abigail Lang; great-grandchildren, Cynthia Lang and Joshua Toso; and brothers and sisters. Kenneth Long Funeral services for Kenneth F. Long, 59, Cambridge, formerly of Anoka and Blaine, took place May 16 at Joy Lutheran Church, Cambridge. Rev. David Franzmeier officiated. Long died May 11 at Mercy Hospital. He was born Sept. 13, 1943 in Newberg, Ore., to Joseph and Mildred Long. He was a 1962 graduate of Anoka High School and owned and operated Atlas Inspection from 1984 to 1996. She is survived by her sisters, Patricia (Dale) Pahl, Carol (Dennis) Nolden, Barbara Humphrey; nieces, Callee Nolden and Nancy Humphrey; stepchildren, Rev. Scott (Debra) Ludford, Connie (Mark) Tscharner, Ann Garvey; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry. Martin, 47, Robbinsdale, took place May 22 at Thurston-Lindberg Funeral Home, Anoka. Rev. Pail Salfrank officiated. The Martins died May 15 from injuries sustained in an auto accident. Lorne Martin was born Jan. 17, 1965 in Fullerton, Calif., to Richard and Patricia A. (Thomas) Martin and was a litigation support supervisor at Zelle, Hofmann, Voelbel, Mason and Gette, LLP. Rene Martin was born Feb. 19, 1956 in Jamaica, N.Y., to Mario N. and Clara M. (Scarpati) Gaiti and was litigation secretary at Dorsey and Whitney, LLP. They are survived by daughters, Jennifer Williams and Kahla Martin; Lorne's parents, Richard and Patricia Martin; brother, Ross Martin and wife Ann; grandparents, Frances Martin, Leonard and Anna Mae Thomas; Rene's mother, Clara DeSantis; brothers, Christopher DeSantis, Mario Gaiti and wife Angela; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mason died May 13 at Innsbruck Health Care Center. He was born April 19, 1930 in Minneapolis and was a maintenance engineer. She is survived by her children, Ariel (Wes) Larson, Barbara (Vern) Krause, Paul Jr. (Carol), Sharon Stern, Benjamin (Donna); and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was born Sept. 5, 1931 in Wilmont to Robert Herman Voss and Alma Brake. He was a machinist, a life member of Sgt. John Rice VFW Post, and a U.S. Navy Koran War veteran.
