Anoka nordic ski team has third and sixth place finishes

The Anoka Nordic ski teams traveled to Mount Itasca in Coleraine last weekend for the Grand Rapids Invitational and placed third and sixth in a field of 13 teams.
The third-place finishing girls' team was led by Brianna Duff, Marie Boo and Laura Peters who placed fifth, 16th and 17th, while the sixth-place finishing boys' team was led by Eric Boyles and Nick Hess, who placed 15th and 23rd...
Wrestling: St. Francis had two tourney champions
In finishing fifth in its own invitational tournament last weekend with 124 (behind Forest Lake, Anoka, Annandale and Kennedy), St. Francis had two individual weight-class champions in Trent Herold and Robby Kriesel.
Herold won the 119-pound division, ultimately out-pointing Anoka's Paul Tellgren 11-5 in the championship round. Kriesel, meantime, won the 171-pound title with a 62-second championship-round fall over Forest Lake's Brent Kolbow.
Finishing second for the team was Mike Castellano at 135 to Forest Lake's Shawn Saxe, while Brent Molitor at 112, Mac Rivard at 125 and Jared Blaser at 130 were all third-place tournament finishers. Other place-finishers for the Saints included Jimmy Lambeth, fifth at 103, Jon Anderson, sixth at 152 and Kevin Daudt, fourth at 160...
Andover's Kessler fell in Brainerd 140 finale
Justin Kessler was Andover's lone finalist last weekend during the Brainerd invitational tournament, a runner-up at 140 pounds. Kessler was defeated 8-0 by Frazee's Ben Anderson in the championship round...
Girls' hockey: Coon Rapids picked off Andover, then Anoka in conference play
After sustaining a non-conference loss last week to Wayzata, the Coon Rapids girls' team fired right back on the ice to nick Andover 2-1 on goals by Rachael Bona and Brianna Sigg, then Anoka 3-1 on goals by Sigg, Bona and Malee Windmeier.
Andover, which had its lone goal supplied by Megan Gilbert in the third period against Coon Rapids, subsequently lost Dec. 12 to Blaine 5-1. Ashley Adams scored the team's lone goal in that defeat.
Prior to its Tuesday night loss at Coon Rapids, the Anoka team fell 5-2 at home to the North Metro Stars last weekend despite goals scored by Ashley Lundy and Kristina Larson...
Zrust led a Blaine surge
Blaine kept pace with the leaders in the Northwest Suburban Conference with its 5-1 win over Andover Dec. 12 after a 3-1 win over Champlin Park last weekend.
Lauren Zrust led the Tuesday night charge against Andover with three goals, while Ashley Tilton and Bridget Braastad scored single goals. Against Champlin Park Jillian Daleiden scored a pair of goals, while Kelley Corkins had one.
Saints won, then lost
The St. Francis girls' team defeated St. Louis Park 6-1 last weekend, but could not maintain that momentum for its game against Chisago Lakes Dec. 12 as it fell 4-1.
In the weekend win, the Saints were led by Haylea Schmid, who scored two goals, while Olivia Zebro, Ashley Bliskowski, Caitlin Meyer and Katelyn Sampsel scored one goal each. In the Tuesday night loss to Chisago, Schmid was the lone goal-scorer for the Saints...
Panthers fell to Irondale

Boys' hockey: Anoka showed its stuff in a pair of victories
Anoka was a team moving up in the state and metro rankings this week after a 7-3 Northwest Suburban win over the North Metro Stars, then a 4-3 win over non-conference foe Wayzata.
In the weekend conference battle with North Metro at the Brooklyn Park Arena, John O'Neill scored a pair of goals, while Will Setterberg, Tyler Manthey, James Campbell, Tony Rush, Dustin Olson and Cory Belisle scored single goals.
O'Neill came through with another two-goal performance in the home victory over Wayzata Dec. 12, while Manthey and Belisle scored single goals. And prior to both these wins, Ryan Noonan contributed three and O'Neill one goal in a 4-1 Northwest Suburban win over Maple Grove. ..
Blaine overcame a pair of different challenges
Defending Section 4AA champion Blaine had to meet and defeat two different challenges and challengers last weekend and Dec. 12.
In the weekend game against Northwest Suburban foe Champlin Park - a team which has struggled lately - Blaine was forced into overtime before winning 3-2. Nick Carson, Zac Frischmon and Ben Lynch scored the goals.
After surviving that scare, Blaine took on a very serious challenge posed by non-conference rival Armstrong and prevailed decisively 8-3 Dec. 12 thanks to three goals scored by Rick Bailey, two more scored by Mike Schaber and single goals scored by Luke Bayer, Chaz Gerads and Frischmon.
Blaine also picked up a tough win Dec. 6 at Osseo, 5-3, on the strength of goals scored by Schaber, Lynch, Frischmon, Joe Beaudette and Ryan Johnson...
Park nicked Andover
Spring Lake Park beat Andover 4-3 in a weekend non-conference game at Fogerty Arena Dec. 9 thanks to a pair of goals scored by Josh Bevers and one each by Derek Holtzieicer and Nick Hafften...
St. Francis beat Mora
Third-period goals scored by Mike Stimart and Joe Benik lifted St. Francis to its first win of the season, 3-1 over Mora last weekend.
Benik also scored the first goal of the game late in the opening period. The reprieve did not last long, however, as St. Francis was dispatched Tuesday night (Dec. 12) by Cambridge 6-1. Blake Richner scored the lone St. Francis goal...

Boys' hoops: Park bounced back
Spring Lake Park dropped a tough North Suburban game to rival Totino Grace last week (Dec. 7), but came right back this past Tuesday night (Dec. 12) to beat Fridley 58-36.
In the win over Fridley, the Park squad was led by Cory Polta, who scored 17 points. Against Grace last week, Park had an eight-point halftime lead but let it slip away into a 54-49 loss in the second half. Dan Krueger and Tim Merritt finished with 14 and 11 points in defeat...
Meadow Creek took win
Meadow Creek came back from a 34-23 halftime deficit Dec. 12 to defeat the PACT Charter School boys' team 58-56. Meadow Creek's Ethan Mignard led all scorers with 24 points.
Prior to this win, Meadow Creek was dispatched 87-68 by Concordia of Roseville. Mignard had 14 in this game, while teammates Andrew Berndt and Matt Kuik had 22 and 11 points...
Coon Rapids fell to MV
Despite battling back from a 10-point first-half deficit, the Coon Rapids boys' team fell 63-57 to non-conference foe Mounds View Dec. 12.

Andover lost twice
Andover lost a pair of non-conference games last weekend and earlier this week to traditional powers Edina and Duluth East.
In the 62-60 loss to Edina Dec. 7, Andover was led by Scott Jesser and David Holcomb, who scored 19 and 18 points, while in the Tuesday night (Dec. 12) loss to East, 60-49, Jesser scored 22 points...
St. Francis fell to Irondale
St. Francis could not maintain a slight lead it took into the second half Tuesday night (Dec. 12) against North Suburban rival Irondale in a 57-46 loss.
Joe Foss led the team with 17 points, while Seth Akason finished with 10. Prior to this setback, St. Francis fell 85-34 to Cooper in another North Suburban game last weekend. Foss finished with 10 points in this contest...

Blaine topped Andover
A second-half, 34-point push by Blaine carried it to a 70-57 Northwest Suburban victory Dec. 12 over Andover.
Alyssa Hames led the team with 18 points, while Jackie Kelly complemented that effort with 12.
Prior to this win, Blaine claimed its first win of the season after starting with three straight losses by beating non-conference foe Armstrong Dec. 8 by 10 points, 73-63. Hames scored 17, Kelly 16, Lindsey Baumgartner 15 and Alex Suda 10 in that victory...
