Staff writer The North Anoka County Emergency (NACE) Food Shelf and the Clothing Closet have a new home. The new location is the Stone Brothers building at 18511 Highway 65 N.E., Suite 200, in East Bethel, which is on the east side of Highway 65 along the service road.
The food distribution hours are the same—Mondays from 9 a.m. to noon and Wednesdays from 1 to 4:30 p.m. At some point, the food shelf could be open in the evening, but specific hours have not been determined, said NACE Food Shelf Director Joanne Yackel. Donations can be mailed to the same address as before—P.O. Box 2 in Cedar, MN 55011. The phone number is still 763-434-7685. Call ahead of time to schedule a donation drop-off or to ask additional questions. This new location is very close to the Landmark Concrete office building that the food shelf has been located since the old Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church closed. An open house at the new food shelf location will be held at some point, Yackel said. Why a new location? Former NACE Director Jim Kappelhoff said when the church closed three years ago to move to a newly constructed facility, he looked all over the area for a new location. They found a spot in the Landmark office building behind the East Bethel Theater, but there was not enough space for the Clothing Closet so that has been housed at the Cedar United Methodist Church in Ham Lake. Kappelhoff said he is happy for the food shelf and hopes the space is adequate to meet its needs. The new location is large enough to handle the Clothing Closet and there is still much more room for food storage. NACE has a freezer and refrigerator, but more of this equipment is needed to meet demand. A laptop and color printer are a couple of items the food shelf is seeking. Searching for a new location has occupied the time of Yackel and the board of directors. Now that this key issue has been settled, Yackel said there is more time to explore growth in service. “It’s an opportunity to continue to grow with the needs of the community,” Yackel said. One concept is to offer deliveries to the home-bound. This service has not been set up yet, but Yackel said she has been talking about this with a couple of people.
